Mayor Daniel Pearl along with Deputy Mayor Tina Schiaffino, Trustees Dana Durso and Todd Svec, and Nassau County Police Commissioner Pat Ryder joined Assemblyman Michael Durso for his announcement of State Assembly sponsored boater safety courses, to promote safe boating practices and remind operators of a motorized vessels that, under Brianna’s Law, they are required to take a state approved boating safety course.
Brianna’s Law, which took effect in January 2020, is named after Brianna Lieneck, an 11-year-old girl who was tragically killed in boating accident on Long Island in 2005. The law requires all power boaters to complete a boating safety course approved by the state by 2025. The course is mandatory based on date of birth and watercraft and ensures a basic level of knowledge to operate a motorized water vessel.
